So, how do you make money? (especially in a down economy). That’s a question I see popping up all over the place on the internet lately. Even at the local coffee shop, people are looking for other ways to make some extra cash. More so within the last year or two, right after the housing crash took place in late 2008. Whether to pay off credit card bills, groceries, or even help pay for the next trip to the gas station. But it goes much deeper than that. In 2009, the national average 401K savings for people younger than 35, was roughly $6,306.00.

With corporations downsizing and sending jobs overseas, it’s even tougher for the average American family to save for retirement and other luxuries they want to pursue in life. But how do you make money when either you’re working too many hours a week, or maybe non at all? Here’s the answer most people are open to.

Work from home (or home based business) opportunities are everywhere these days. In 2009 alone, the direct selling industry had $28.33 billion in sales, with 16.1 million sales people. (source: DSA research service center), and recent statistics show numbers are on the rise. Household names such as Donald Trump, Robert Kiyosaki, and Warren Buffet endorse, and promote network marketing, in order to stimulate the economy, and pursue the entrepreneurial spirit in those who seek it.

But what’s the best home based business opportunity to join and promote? Some network marketers say that MLM (multi level marketing) type businesses have the best retention. Others may argue that the DSA has some of the best network marketing businesses to be a representative for since most business members who belong to the DSA, are under strict guidelines, and must reach and maintain a certain “code of ethics” before they register with them.

How Do You Make Money As An Affiliate?

Another answer to the question “how do you make money in a down economy?”, might be affiliate sales. What’s an affiliate you might ask? An affiliate program is a way for you to sell another company’s products or services and receive a commission. Or if you come to that point, it’s a way for you to get others to sell your products on the internet.

Most online business who are wanting to promote their business or offer, will allow you to become an affiliate with them to promote their brand. Most affiliate programs are free to join, but some who offer better value in the home based business niche, have a better payout, and teach you how to properly market your home based business online as well.

When it’s all said and done, most people who are struggling to make ends meet, just might only have one source of income coming in…their job. It’s best to have multiple streams of income helping your bank account out each and every month. Be it a home based business, or as an affiliate, either (or both) could end up saving your financial situation in the long run.
